TURNER – The eighth annual Winter Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Leavitt Institute Building, 99 Matthews Way. The event is a major fund raiser for the Turner Public Library and the Turner Museum and Historical Association housed in the Leavitt Building.

This year officers of both town organizations are proud to announce a new feature has been added. There will be a “Giving Tree” available on site and those who attend, or just drive by, are encouraged to donate mittens, books and nonperishable food items which will be distributed to local families.

Both community resources will be holding open houses during the festival and will feature several events for people of all ages to enjoy, giving all who attend an opportunity to visit with neighbors and do some holiday shopping. There is always ample parking and the building is equipped with an elevator.

The library has been conducting a silent auction of items for virtually every interest that are on display and literally fill the library; the auction will continue until Dec. 10 with last chance bidding ending at 1 p.m. Until the 10th, visit the library on Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to noon, to bid on items donated by area businesses and individuals.

The library will offer a preschool/K story hour at 10 am. Luncheon of hot dogs and rolls, corn chowder, chicken noodle soup for $4, will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mrs. Claus will read to interested children at 11:30 and gingerbread cookies for children to make/take guided by the library’s Junior Corporators will take place from noon to 1 p.m.

The a cappella choir from Leavitt Area Regional High School, Hornets in Harmony, will be caroling in the Gazebo on the Green at 1 p.m.

The museum’s activities will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Santa Claus will be greeting all and listening to children’s wish stories in the museum on the fourth floor, and will be visiting and listening throughout the building during the day. Area crafters will be on the ground floor exhibiting and selling their wares. The raffle for the locally hand-crafted quilt will continue through the day and the winning ticket holder will be announced at 3 p.m.

The museum will sell its 2012 calendars with photos of life in Turner during the 1800s and will conduct a bake sale of pies, breads and fudge. The museum again will conduct its sales of poinsettias, centerpieces, door swags and dried arrangements. It will offer free, throughout the day, coffee, donuts and cider in the kitchen.
