For several years, I have contemplated writing to Lewiston officials to voice my opinion about the location of the city’s Christmas tree.

I am a lifelong Lewiston resident and for most of my life, Christmas in Lewiston and Auburn included a large tree in the center island of Main Street in Lewiston. The generosity of the person who donated the tree, not to mention the efforts of the city workers and all those who worked to make the display possible, was rewarded by the thousands of people who drove by the tree and admired its beauty.

Today, the city’s Christmas tree is admired by a small fraction of its residents. The tree is hidden in an obscure park that few people have an opportunity to see, or even a desire to seek out.

I find it a shame that there isn’t a more appropriate place to show our holiday spirit, our community pride and our gratefulness for other people’s generosity in a more appropriate location.

Imagine the Christmas tree located at the corner of Main and Lincoln streets, and the thousands of L-A residents who might be touched by its beauty.
