JAY – A local man faces charges after police caught stealing copper, police Chief Larry White Sr. said Monday.

Cpl. Jeff Fournier responded Sunday morning to a report that someone was breaking into a vacant house on the Old Jay Hill Road, White said. Fournier found no burglary. He spoke to a person who pointed out there was another vacant house not too far from the first one, White said.

When Fournier arrived at the second residence he saw a sliding door ajar and heard noises coming from inside. Livermore Falls Sgt. Steve Allen responded to the house and the officers entered and found Chad Stewart, 29, of 401 Old Jay Hill Road, Jay.

Fournier arrested Stewart on felony charges of burglary and attempted theft, White said. A probation hold was put on Stewart because he was already on probation, he said. He remained in jail Monday.

Stewart told police he was stealing copper from the house, White said.

Stewart had some copper piping cut in the basement and piled up, he said.

“He literally was caught in the act, White said.
