John Bade, left, of Wales and Charlie Hammond of Greene cross the Garcelon Bog boardwalk in Lewiston on Monday. The two bow hunters were hiking into the 100-acre area to hunt for deer during the final week of the expanded archery season. The Androscoggin Land Trust and the City of Lewiston have partnered to permanently protect the city-owned bog through a conservation easement held by ALT. The area within walking distance of the Farwell School neighborhood is now protected from development, but open to the public for recreational and educational purposes. An informational meeting will be held Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at Farwell Elementary School to discuss the easement and to highlight the ecological benefits of the bog. The boardwalk is one of two trails that give people access to the area.
A trail that runs between Jeannette Avenue and Warren Avenue crosses the Garcelon Bog Conservation Area in Lewiston. The trail is one of two that explore the 100-acre protected area and is open to the public. The other foot path is a boardwalk that begins at the end of Russell Street.
