100 years ago, 1911

The old Pompilly place, so called, situated on the North River Road, Auburn, and owned by Frank Maybury, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. The live stock was saved, but a large amount of hay, farming utensils, household furniture and other valuables was burned. The loss is estimated at $8,000 partially covered by insurance. How the fire caught is a mystery. Mr. and Mrs. Maybury were attending the Androscoggin Pamona grange meeting at Lisbon Falls.

50 years ago, 1961

Following a long debate last night, the Auburn Superintending School Committee voted to increase the cost to junior high school pupils of the hot lunch program from 25 to 30 cents for each meal, effective Jan. 2 and also to pay the salary of the director of the hot lunch program out of school department budget accounts starting next April 1.

The action was taken in a move to aid in balancing the hot lunch program account which currently is operating at a deficit.

25 years ago, 1986

LISBON — Fund-raising efforts are under way to send Elizabeth “Beth” Harkins, of Lisbon Center, to Australia, where she has been accepted as an exchange student.

She plans to leave on Jan. 23 and will remain in that country for 12 months, providing that she can raise a total of about $6,000 which is required to pay her expenses for the year she is away.
