LEWISTON — The Sun Journal’s sports department has added another award to its trophy case.
The Associated Press Sports Editors announced this week that the Sun Journal’s sports Web site received ‘Honorable Mention,’ placing it in the top 20 of its size category among newspapers across North America.
“This award really validates our commitment to bringing our area sports enthusiasts the best local content possible, through all media available,” Assistant Sports Editor, Online Justin Pelletier said. “Everyone who has had a hand in developing the site and producing and providing the content, from Sun Journal Web Editor Pattie Reaves and developer Brandon Waltz to all of the writers and photographers, ought to be very proud.”
The APSE contest is in its third year, and this year had a record number of entries as well as a panel of 24 judges evaluating the field.
For the second consecutive year, the sites were judged over two dates, selected at random by the contest chair. Entries were split into three categories: over 2 million average monthly unique users; 500,000-1.9 million uniques and under 500,000 uniques, the category into which the Sun Journal falls.
The Sun Journal is the only Maine newspaper to be honored in this year’s APSE Web site contest, and one of only two in New England across all categories. The Boston Globe was honored as a Top-10 Web site in the “over 2 million” category.
