BANGOR — Philip Mayo Raymond, 79, of Jay, died early Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Eastern Maine Medical Center.

He was born April 8, 1932, in Farmington, a son of Philip S. and Glynnese (Mayo) Raymond of North Jay, the place in which he always called home. He attended local schools graduating from Wilton Academy in 1947. He went on to a year at Hebron Academy and later Brown University on a Navy scholarship.

On Nov. 20, 1952, he married Shriley Hutchinson of Stonington in Bangor.

He was then drafted into the Army to fulfill his obligations and they sent him to electrical drafting school and on to Germany. Upon his discharge from the service, he worked for the Maine and New Hampshire Granite Co. in North Jay and the John Swenson Granite Co. in Concord, N.H., and then back to North Jay.

After a short break, he moved to Rocky Hill, Conn., for 30 years, where he worked in the construction business eventually owning his own company. He was the founder of the Steel Workers Employers Association and managed to pass some legislation to benefit both the steel workers and their employers.

In retirement, he and his wife lived in Rockwood for 10 years before moving back to Bean’s Corner in Jay in 2004. Phil was active in the Wilton Masonic Lodge 156 and the Greenville Lodge 149.

He and his wife were avid bowlers and during his vacations he enjoyed trolling for togue.

Phil is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley of Jay; his daughter, Cathy Chobot and her husband, Peter, of Mendon, Mass.; a grandson, Steven Shwartz; two granddaughters, Kimberly and Tersa Chobot; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, retired technical sergeant James Raymond and his wife, Janie Cummings, of Machias.

He was predeceased by his parents; and an infant brother, George Evans Raymond.
