PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Portland has set a Thursday deadline for OccupyMaine demonstrators to notify the city of their intentions. In the meantime, the encampment won’t be disturbed.
The letter from City Manager Mark Rees told the demonstrators that they can disband, go to court or seek a new permit from the city. He also told them that there would be no effort to remove the encampment without at least 48 hours of notice from the city.
More than three dozen tents remain at the OccupyMaine site after the City Council voted 8-1 to deny the group’s request to stay in Lincoln Park.
OccupyMaine set up camp to protest economic disparity and Wall Street bailouts in early October. Other Occupy sites in Bangor and Augusta have dismantled.
