PARIS — After controversy at previous board meetings, Selectman Ted Kurtz has stepped down as chairman of the Board of Selectmen on Monday night.

Former Co-chairman Robert Kirchherr automatically became chairman, as directed in the board’s bylaws.

At Monday’s meeting, there was also the matter of Kurtz stepping down as the board’s representative to the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments. Kurtz, as chairman, was also the board’s AVCOG representative. Kurtz said he will submit a letter of resignation to AVCOG and that he had planned to.

The board unanimously elected Kirchherr as representative to AVCOG.

Kurtz was elected board chairman after the town meeting and followed former Chairman Raymond Glover, who didn’t run for his seat in 2011.

He made the decision to step down after a heated Nov. 28 meeting, when several selectmen confronted him about his manner of communicating with board members and the public.

Kurtz said he had a long conversation with Kirchherr on what would be in the best interest of the town before deciding to resign from his chairmanship.

“I’m relieved we have this behind us and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead,” Kurtz said at the time.
