BATH — Viola Sudds Osgood, 97, of Bedford Street, died Sunday, Dec. 11, at HillHouse Assisted Living, following a short illness.

She was born July 24, 1914, in Boothbay, a daughter of Roland and Jennie Dodge Sudds. The family moved to Auburn in 1922 and she was educated in the local schools, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1931. She furthered her education, graduating from Farmington Normal School in 1933 and the University of Maine in 1961.

On Sept. 23, 1938, she married Fred Osgood and moved to Bath to make their home. They were soul mates who were inseparable. You would seldom find one without the other. Family was the most important thing to Viola, there was nothing that she wouldn’t do for them.

Viola taught school at Littlefield’s Corner grades one through six for three years, Stevens Mills school grade five for two years and in Bath from 1946 to 1974 at South Street and Fisher Schools grade one.

She joined Winter Street Church in 1939 and was currently a member at United Church of Christ, Congregational. Viola joined Genesta Chapter No. 73 in 1944, was worthy matron in 1944, district deputy grand matron No. 4 1971-72, Grand Martha of Grand Chapter of Mo. in 1976 and grand representative of Iowa and Idaho.

Viola was also a member of Bath-Brunswick Teachers’ Association, Maine Association of Retirees, Maine Teachers’ Association and Bath Area Senior Citizens, where she was an avid cribbage player, who played faithfully up until the day she died and often won with partner and friend, Annette Jones. Viola loved the outdoors; going fishing, camping and boating with her husband was something that she always looked forward to. Traveling to see the world and all its beauty was also a passion of hers. She, together with her husband, traveled the country, driving to almost every state. One of her last trips was to Farmington in 2008, where she attended her 75th reunion with University of Maine at Farmington and was honored for being the oldest living alumni.

She is predeceased by her husband, Fred, who died July 9, 1995; a sister, Doris Robinson; and two brothers, Carroll Sudds and Weston Sudds.

Surviving are her daughter, Cynthia Osgood Fullerton and her husband, Joseph of Standish; three grandchildren, Michael Fullerton and his wife, Cheryl of Sugarloaf, James Fullerton and his wife, Jenny of Topsham and Jennie Johnson and her husband, Mark of Gray; and five great-grandchildren, David, Rachel, Rebecca Fullerton, Jacob Fullerton and Joseph Johnson.

The family would like to send a special thanks to all the staff at the HillHouse for the personal and loving care they gave to their mother.
