WEST PARIS — Evelyn E. Schau of South Paris, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Ledgeview Living Center.
She was born in Elizabeth, N.J., July 18, 1909, the daughter of John C. and Nelsina (Gregersen) Smith. She was educated in Elizabeth schools and attended Bible college in Philadelphia, Pa. She was a founding member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Elizabeth. On May 2, 1936, she married August Schau, who died on July 10, 1965.
During the 1930s, she worked at Western Electric in Kearny, N.J., operating the Holerith numerical sorter and Powers Alpha sorter, precursors of modern computers. In the 1960s, she worked with IBM and RCA computers in the accounting department of Boyle-Midway in Cranford, N.J.
She retired in 1971 and moved to Buckfield in 1973, where she joined the Buckfield Community Church. On moving to South Paris, she became a member of Deering Memorial Methodist Church.
She is survived by her sons, August Schau and his wife, Jody, of Buckfield and Alfred Schau and companion, Joanne, of Lisbon; her daughter, Linda Loretto and husband, Larry Schwenk, of Brooksville; her grandchildren, August Schau Jr. and Melissa Reuter of Buckfield, Jonathan Schau of Sudbury, Mass., Joanne Tomasco of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., and James Schau and Edward Schau of New Jersey; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
