PHILLIPS — A local man was injured climbing out his bedroom window early Tuesday morning after fire erupted in an ell of his 186 Park St. home.
Scott Pinkham received a cut to his head in the 6-foot drop from his first-story bedroom. He landed on rocks as he escaped the 5 a.m. fire, Phillips Fire Chief James Gould said. A NorthStar ambulance crew treated him at the scene but he declined a trip to the hospital.
The fire started from a wood stove in an approximately 20- by 20-foot ell between the main portion of the home and the garage, he said.
Pinkham had just moved into the home within the last 30 days and was starting renovations. He was alone at the time of the fire.
Firefighters had to force their way into the ell to reach the fire that significantly damaged that portion of the home but did not travel to the main section or garage, he said.
The fire went into the roof and they had to cut a hole in the roof to vent the smoke, he said.
The rest of the house received significant water and smoke damage. Windows were broken, he said.
The home is not livable. Gould estimated up to $50,000 in damage. He thought the home was insured.
Pinkham is staying with family members.
Mutual aid from Strong and Salem helped at the scene.
