PORTLAND — “AXED!,” a couple of one-acts about Lizzie Borden, who was accused of killing her father and stepmother with a hatchet in 1892 in Massachusetts (and acquitted), will be presented by Lucid Stage on Jan. 6-8.

Both of the plays present Borden through the eyes of women who had intimate connections with her. The first play, “Lace Curtain Irish,” is a one-woman production featuring Denise Poirier in the role of Bridget Sullivan, the Irish maid who was present on the morning of the murders. This production, directed by Ariel Francoeur, premiered this fall at an Off-Off Broadway Festival.

The second play, “The Greatest Actress Who Ever Lived,” directed by playwright Carolyn Gage, takes a look at Borden through the eyes of her lesbian lover, famous actress Nance O’Neil. In this play, Karen Ball, in the role of O’Neil, spars with a closeted tabloid reporter played by Josieda Lord. The play also premiered this fall in New York at the Fresh Fruit LGBT Festival.

The plays will be followed by a talk-back with Gage and the actors.

“As a lesbian historian, I have been haunted by Lizzie Borden for many years,” Gage said. “But she was one of the most private women in history, and so it has been necessary to approach her identity through the more colorful characters in her life — and these women are wild.”

The plays will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6-7, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8. The matinee will be ASL interpreted.

Tickets for the fundraiser for Lucid Stage, 29 Baxter Blvd., are $12, $10 for students and seniors. For reservations, call 899-3993 or visit www.lucidstage.com.
