KENNEBUNK — Constance “Connie” Mary Roux, 77, of Cumberland Foreside, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, in Kennebunk after a long illness. She suffered from Alzheimer’s.
Connie was born in Lewiston, Feb. 8, 1934, to Catherine W. and James B. Longley. She graduated from Lewiston High School and attended Bowdoin College before receiving her Associates Degree from the University of Maine.
Connie was active in her community and church. She attended St Joseph’s parish in Lewiston and Holy Martyrs in Falmouth after relocating to the Portland area. Connie worked for many years at New England Telephone and retired from the company as a network programmer in 1993.
She was an avid gardener, enjoyed boating and was a life-long Celtics fan, who especially admired the great Bill Russell. She also had a keen interest in politics. Connie worked on her brother, Jim Longley’s successful Maine gubernatorial campaign and ran for the State Senate as an independent against Olympia Snowe, losing by just 146 votes in a close contest.
Connie is survived by her sister, Marguerite (Longley) Murphy of Cumberland; five of her six children, David Roux of Upperville, Va., Donna Hart of Brisbane, Calif., Katie Papkee of Cumberland, Sally Tartre of Kennebunk and Mary Train of Cumberland; along with 14 grandchildren, Alex, Jocelyn, Margot, Jamie, Patrick, Ian, Jenna, Sarah, Christopher, Sierra, Sam, Amelia, Bailey and Moira; and great-grandchild, Nicholas.
Connie was predeceased by her husband, Don in December 1993; her second husband, Frank Scalera in December 2008; her son, James Roux, died in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, which has been the great sadness of her life; and her siblings, James Longley, Frank Longley, Mary Longley and Eileen (Longley) Bradbury.
