VFW meeting

LEWISTON — The Longley-Dionne VFW Post 9150 will hold their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Multi-Purpose Center. All officers and members are encouraged to attend. Agenda will include upcoming events. Eligible veterans wishing to join the post should attend.

Duplicate bridge

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on Dec. 13 were as follows: first, Patricia Garcia and David Lock; second, Mary Ann Trafton and Mike True; third, Sherry Hinckley and Fred Letourneau; fourth, Jan Arey and Linda Leotsakos; first in B, Nancy Farmer and Hazel Glazier; second, Sue Kaluzynski and Donna Bartlett; first in C, Sue Kaluzynski and Donna Bartlett.

Winners at Schooner Estates on Dec. 14 were: first, Les Buzzell and John Hackett; second, Mary Ann Trafton and Fred Letourneau.

Christmas parties will be held at all games the week of Dec. 19.

Christmas Eve service

HEBRON — A Christmas Eve service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, at Hebron Community Baptist Church, 45 Station Road.

Hebron Girl Scout Troop 864 will help present the nativity service. All donations received will sponsor the Girl Scouts on their trip to Washington, D.C., in June to attend the 100th annual Girl Scout Sing-A-Long.

Cafe en Francais

BRUNSWICK — Cafe en Francais takes place from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month at People Plus, 35 Union St.

French speakers are invited to have a cup of the ou cafe. Nous parlons of our family histories and experiences as French speakers.

Local attorney Richard Lord will be the guest at the Dec. 28 gathering. He has represented the interests of the French community for many years and will bring a selection of photos of Old Brunswick. All are welcome.

Babysitting course

LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine will hold an American Red Cross babysitting course on Thursday, Dec. 29, and Friday, Dec. 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The goal of the course is to provide students the proper skills to care for any child safely. The YWCA babysitter training plus course will teach professionalism; help develop skills in leadership, basic care, first aid skills, home indoor and outdoor safety and certification in child and infant CPR.

Cost is $75 for members and $90 for nonmembers and is open for boys and girls ages 11-15. Space is limited. For more information or to register, call the YWCA of Central Maine at 795-4050.

Citizenship prep

LEWISTON — Lewiston Adult Education will offer a free 10-week citizenship preparation class, scheduled to start Jan. 5.

The course provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to pass the U.S. Citizenship interview and become citizens. The class covers U.S. history, government, politics, geography, customs and traditions. Students will also learn the USCIS “100 questions” that will be asked during the interview and will be taught to verbally answer questions from the N-400 Naturalization form.

Though it is not an ESL class, some basic elements of grammar as well as appropriate vocabulary will be covered. Applications are currently being accepted for the upcoming class. For more information, contact the Adult Learning Center at 784-2928, ext. 2.

Shaker Village grant

NEW GLOUCESTER — The directors of the Maine Community Foundation have approved a Maine Expansion Arts Grant for the 2012 Maine Summer Market and Demonstration to be held on Aug. 25 at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village.

The grant money will allow for an increased number of performances by Maine Native American artists. The market and demo celebrates in its fourth year not only the achievements of some 15 artists but also the more than 200-year-old connection between the Maine tribes and the Maine Shakers.
