AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Police say a veteran who had stopped to help a driver injured in a car crash was himself seriously hurt when he was struck by a van.

Augusta police say 26-year-old Jeremy Gilley of Waterville was driving on Route 3 early Sunday morning when he came upon an accident.

Police tell the Kennebec Journal that Gilley parked behind the disabled car and got out to help when he was pinned between the two vehicles by a van driven by a 16-year-old youth.

Gilley was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what police described as critical injuries.

The other driver suffered minor injuries and the teen was not hurt.

Police say Gilley told them he was a veteran but did not say what branch he served in.
