JAY — One person was injured Monday night when a car passed a tractor-trailer on Route 4 just before the Maxwell Road intersection in North Jay and hit a stopped car, police Officer Nicholas Gulliver said Tuesday.

Kenwood Beckler, 66, of Wilton, was driving north on Route 4 and moved into the left lane to try to pass a tractor-trailer. He did not see a car driven by Catherine Gilles, 42, of Farmington, which was stopped waiting to make the left turn onto Maxwell Road, Gulliver said.

Beckler was going at a “pretty decent speed” when his car hit the back of the stopped vehicle, he said. The speed limit in that area is 50 mph.

Both drivers declined medical treatment at the scene, he said.

Gilles did go by personal vehicle to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington afterward, he said.

Beckler’s 1993 Ford Taurus and Gilles 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier were destroyed, Gulliver said.

Jay firefighters and Wilton police assisted Gulliver at the scene.
