RUMFORD – Mountain Valley High School students have two ways to serve their local community and beyond. National Honor Society president Katie Billings and vice president Cam Welch explained both at a recent school-wide assembly.
Welch said, “The first project is a food drive to benefit our local food bank for the people in our community that need a little extra assistance this holiday season. The food drive boxes are located in the lobby and as you’ve probably seen they’re labeled with freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.”
The deadline for food donations was Dec. 16. The class that brought in the most items was awarded a free period to watch a movie as a class in the auditorium on Dec. 22.
Billings said, “The second project we’re doing is a book drive sponsored by the World Wide Book Drive Organization. The book drive is the state service project for the Maine NHS this year. We’re collecting new and used books of all types but we especially need textbooks.”
The World Wide Book Drive is looking to donate more than 300,000 books to qualified organizations within 2011. The books will go to children in disaster zones, poverty stricken communities, schools, libraries and domestic and international charities.
According to Billings, who is the state NHS public relations officer, “The Maine State NHS is hoping, with your help, to donate a large portion of this goal to the book drive organization this year. We encourage you to bring any books in from now to March 1 to help fight illiteracy and support our local NHS.”
Members of the community may also donate books by placing them in the box in the MVHS lobby.
A few of the NHS members prepared a short skit to show the importance of donating food. The first act of the skit showed people who had financial problems going to the local food bank. Unfortunately, the food bank had to turn them away because of lack of donations.
In the second act, students from MVHS donated food. When the people came back to the food bank, they were thrilled with the amount and types of food they could receive.
The students in the audience laughed at the “actors” but still understood the important message they conveyed.
The NHS thespians included Ayla Allen, Andrea Benya, Kate Cote, Jamaica Ford, Lexi Fryover, Kyle Gauvin, Renee Knox, Rebecca Maifeld, Zachary Radcliffe and Kirstin Ridge.
