The Auburn Free Press, Auburn’s new weekly newspaper, made its first appearance in that city yesterday. It is published by George M. Haskins of West Auburn. Charles S. Allen, formerly editor of the Melrose Free Press, is editor and Manley A. Brigham is advertising manager and special writer. It is an attractive, eight-page sheet, well filled with advertising and Auburn news.

Temperatures remained below the freezing point in the Twin Cities for the eighth consecutive day yesterday despite a bright sun shining down from an almost cloudless sky.
The highest reading recorded yesterday at the Union Water Power Co. gatehouse was 29 degrees at 2 p.m. after an overnight low of 10 degrees at 6 a.m., one of the lowest readings of the season.
The last time the mercury climbed above freezing was on Dec. 14, when it reached 33 degrees.

With the rap of a gavel, it was over.
With no discussion, the Lewiston School Committee voted unanimously Monday to close Frye Elementary School at the end of the current school year and initiate a system-wide redistricting to relocate the school’s 170 students.
School Committee Chairman Carmen D. Clifford was surprised that no one wanted to comment about the closing. The last time the city closed a school, Jordan School in 1983, more than 100 appeared at a meeting to oppose the closing.
