TURNER — Nine people were taken to a Lewiston hospital Friday after vehicles collided head-on on Route 4.

Among the injured was a 2-year-old passenger in one car and a 9-year-old in the other. Police investigating the wreck said none of the injuries appeared life-threatening.

The 4 p.m. crash near Murray’s Mega Mart brought commuter traffic to a standstill as police blocked off the busy roadway around the crash site.

Investigators said Anthony Small, 31, of Livermore Falls was driving a Jeep Cherokee north on Route 4 when he lost control of the vehicle.

Small’s vehicle slid into the southbound lane where it collided head-on with a Pontiac driven by Patricia West, 64, of Florida, police said.

Emergency crews had to use extrication equipment to free Small and his four passengers. Meanwhile, Turner firefighters and other medics tended to West and her three passengers.

Each of the victims was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. A hospital official said most of them were expected to be treated and released. However both drivers were still being treated late Friday.

Small was listed in stable condition, according to a nursing supervisor. She could not release information on West’s condition.

Police said injuries suffered in the crash consisted of bumps, bruises and broken bones.

Maine State Police were continuing to investigate.
