AUBURN — A worker at a Maine turnpike construction site suffered minor injuries in a fall Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

The accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on the overpass of the on-ramp to the turnpike.

Auburn fire officials said a steel I-beam the man was standing on shifted suddenly, apparently throwing him about 10 feet into the air and 30 feet from the beam.

“It sounded like it was going to be a big thing,” Auburn fire Capt. Dean Milligan said, but the man sustained only minor injuries. He was taken to a Lewiston hospital with bruising to his side and legs.

State police also investigated, because it was a turnpike work site.

Milligan said he could not release the worker’s name.
