I read the Sun Journal editorial “Toy program overwhelmed by generous people” on Dec. 28. Although the full story remains to be written, I wanted to put in a few opinions myself.
I cannot begin to thank everyone who donated to the Hope Haven Gospel Mission; so many people just gave and left, some with a hug, a kind word, encouragement. The community truly gave us more than money and gifts to give. People gave us the strength to keep on, hope for the future, and an affirmation that what we are doing is the right thing.
For those things, I will never be able to thank them enough.
As for the gifts, we were able to fill all the applications for 2011, and then a few more who called later. We weren’t turning anyone away if there was a need.
At Christmas dinner, we served over 200 meals, and were able to give presents to children who attended. I’m looking at the ability to help the community when someone needs a winter coat, school supplies, and maybe even put a sandbox in the backyard for the children who come through here this summer. The community’s generosity is going help all year.
This is our first year at Hope Haven. Pastor John and I took over from the McLaughlins on Nov. 1, and it’s been a baptism by fire. With the community’s continued support, we will make a difference in Lewiston/Auburn.
