LIVERMORE FALLS — Board of Selectmen Chairman Bill Demaray asked Highway Department foreman Bill Nichols on Tuesday to have the newly installed “no parking” sign on Main Street lowered so motorists can see it.

People used to be able to park on Main Street next to Western Auto and Foss Jewelry. But those parking spaces were eliminated during road construction in 2011, and new traffic signals were installed at the intersection of Main and Bridge streets.

It is causing some confusion with motorists, Demaray said.

He also said that police need to start enforcing use of the new traffic light installed for people coming out of Cumberland Farms. Prior to road construction, there was no signal for the Cumberland Farms entrance and exit.

Police are very aware of the situation, Town Manager Kristal Flagg said.

“I’m not saying ticket everyone,” Demaray said, but stop vehicles that are not stopping and warn them to obey the new signal.

It doesn’t take more than a few stops to get drivers’ attention, he said.

The new traffic signals also have a red stop arrow for motorists coming down Main Street and turning onto Bridge Street, also known as Route 4, near Leavitt-Whittemore Realty Group.

Prior to the installation of the new signals, motorists were able to stop at the red light and then when it was safe, take a right.

Demaray said the signals are synchronized to stop motorists on Main Street and let traffic coming out of Cumberland Farms exit.

Flagg said the pedestrian-crossing signs are not working properly and she has contacted the contractor to have them fixed.

She also said that the pedestrian-crossing signals make a loud beeping to assist blind and sight-impaired pedestrians.

The beeping will not go away and residents will have to adjust to the noise, she said.

The sound can be heard from the nearby municipal building.
