BETHEL — A registered sex offender living in town was charged Thursday with sexually abusing a teen girl, Rumford police Detective Sgt. James Bernard said.

Christopher Lee Sheldon, 27, of 23 Mason St., Apt. 18, was charged with two felony counts of sexual abuse of a minor.

Unable to make bail, Sheldon was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris to await arraignment at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, in Oxford County Superior Court, also in Paris.

Bernard said that on New Year’s Day, Rumford police received a complaint from a 16-year-old girl who told them she had been involved in a sexual relationship with Sheldon starting when she was 15.

According to the Maine Sex Offender Registry, Sheldon was convicted on Nov. 14, 2005, of unlawful sexual contact in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn. He is required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

“Additional charges are expected, as the case remains under investigation,” Bernard said.
