Gov. Paul LePage’s five-month search for a new commissioner for the Department of Marine Resources has ended where it began last summer.

The governor on Friday nominated Patrick Keliher to head one of the state’s most demanding agencies. Keliher, of South Gardiner, has served as the deputy DMR commissioner since the abrupt resignation of LePage’s first pick, Norman Olsen.

Keliher has worked in DMR since 2007.

LePage applauded Keliher’s efforts since he took over for Olsen. Olsen left after his support for rebuilding the groundfishing industry rankled the state’s lobstermen lobby.

“Pat has gone above and beyond demonstrating his ability to serve as commissioner,” LePage said in a written statement. “He has worked to reorganize the department, focusing on areas that have the biggest economic benefit to the state.

Prior to joining DMR, Keliher served as executive director of the Atlantic Salmon Commission and executive director of the New England States of the Coastal Conservation Association, Greater New England. Keliher has also served as a licensed Coast Guard captain and is a registered Maine guide.

“I am honored to be selected by Gov. LePage to be the next commissioner of Marine Resources,” Keliher said. “We have many challenges facing our coastal communities – it is imperative that our long-term management plans take into account the sustainability of the resources and also the people who depend on these resources for their livelihood.”

The Joint Standing Committee on Marine Resources will review Keliher’s nomination before he is confirmed by the state Senate.
