Thanks to Terry Karkos for his coverage of the Maine Mineral Symposium and mineral news from the Oxford Hills.

Speaking as symposium chairman, I did not receive any specific questions from Mr. Karkos when he wrote the story about the symposium being terminated (Jan. 6), so I want to make some clarifying remarks.

It was a difficult decision to end this popular event, and the symposium committee appreciates the participation of the hundreds of people who attended.

However, we are 22 years older than when we started. Because of family and career responsibilities, as well as logistical issues, it is no longer possible for our very small volunteer group to continue organizing this large and complex event.

Last spring’s symposium, including our tribute to West Paris miner Frank Perham, was among the best ever, so we decided to exit as a team and leave it to others to carry on with a similar gathering elsewhere.

Unlike other old “rock groups,” we regret to say there will be no reunion tour.
