LEWISTON — Two more meetings about the advent of a rewards card that would specifically target Maine businesses and consumers will be held Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. and Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce office, 415 Lisbon St. Reservations are requested at 784-5868.

The Maine Buy Local program will take the form of a rewards card running on the MyAxisPoint platform and link consumers and local businesses together, according to the developer, Colorado-based Synderesis Technologies.

Merchants will save on processing fees and have targeted marketing information. Consumers will have all their loyalty/rewards points in one convenient place and can “opt-in” to control and receive promotions and discounts, according to the company.

Auburn businessman and former Auburn mayor Dick Gleason, who is among those supporting the program, said that “by keeping customers local, (local businesses) will have a stronger sense of patronage and the community will realize a higher revenue base.”

In December, executives from Synderesis Technologies were in Auburn for an open forum meeting where they received feedback on how to tailor the platform for the Androscoggin County area.

Rob Bohn, Synderesis CEO, said studies prove the importance of a “buy local” program to a community. “Communities with a ‘buy local’ initiative reported revenue growth of 5.6 percent on average in 2010, compared to 2.1 percent for those elsewhere,” Bohn said.
