POLAND — Friends of Ricker Library have planned a new season of noontime programs, Check It Out!

The brown bag lunchtime gatherings will feature once-a-month programs from noon to 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of January, February, March and April. Snow date will always be the following Wednesday if the program must be cancelled due to weather.

The January program will be held on Jan. 18, in the Community Room of the library in Poland. Poland resident Gloria Limoges will talk about her artwork and her use of found objects to create new work. Limoges is a painter and sculptor whose work has been included in juried exhibitions at Lewiston-Auburn College and has been shown in a number of other local venues, including Central Maine Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospital, Gallery 5 in Lewiston and Central Maine Technical College. Several of her large environmental works are displayed at St. Philip’s Church in Auburn.

The programs are open to all. Guests are invited to bring their lunches. Coffee, tea and water will be available at the library.

Post 22 meeting

LEWISTON — Post 22 American Legion Lewiston will hold its monthly membership meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St.

Included will be the annual Post 22 memorial service honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Chaplain Donald T. Dube will offer special prayers, adjutant Jerry DerBoghosian will read a proclamation for the occasion.

All Post 22 members who served in Desert Storm Operation 1991 will be honored. It is suggested that if you are attending to call DerBoghosian at 782-5700, 376-5257 or 353-7435.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and prizes will be given. Unit 22 Auxiliary will meet at 5:15 p.m. A lunch will be served.

Social Security

AUBURN — The Social Security Administration will present a workshop on their online services at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Auburn Public Library. Call the library at 333-6640, ext. 4, to register since space is limited.

This hands-on workshop will show how to use www.socialsecurity.gov and avoid unneeded trips to a Social Security office. In survey after survey, Social Security’s online services top customer satisfaction lists. That’s because doing business with Social Security online is fast, convenient and secure. The workshop is appropriate for anyone interested in planning retirement, applying for benefits or learning about Social Security’s history.

Find information on an array of Social Security subjects and take advantage of their most popular services such as: estimate retirement benefits; apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits; apply for extra help with Medicare prescription drug costs; submit a change of address or phone number; start or change direct deposit; request a proof of income letter; or replace a lost Medicare card.

Maine food system

LEWISTON — The Great Falls Forum lecture series will present Mark B. Lapping, executive director of the Muskie School for Public Service at the University of Southern Maine, speaking on “Understanding Maine’s Food System: Life at the End of the Pipeline,” from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St.

Car seat checks

LEWISTON — United Ambulance Service will provide free car seat inspections from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at 338 East Ave. No registration is required.
