CARRABASSETT VALLEY – This past weekend, Sugarloaf Mountain hosted four USASA events for skiers and snowboarders: Slopestyle, Rail Jam, Slalom and Giant Slalom. It would prove to be a very successful weekend for the home team with CVA athletes earning many of the top spots.

In the slopestyle competition, CVA snowboarders Madeline Chamberlin, Brianna Daly, Whitney Kulich, Tyler Kulich and Adam Hohmeyer all rode to first-place finishes in their respective age groups.

Also joining their teammates on the podium were Libby Shanahan (second), Jerry McGuire (third), Jasper Tripp (third) and Freddy McCarthy (fhird).

For the skiers, CVA’s Declan O’Brien (first), Matthew Smith (second) and Michael Lundy (third) swept the podium in the 16-to-18-year-old age group.

Saturday night the Sugarloaf Skirmish rail jam kicked off with one of the most challenging array of features that Sugarloaf has ever assembled.

In a competitive field of skiers, CVA’s Keegan Kilbride advanced to the finals. At the end of the competition CVA freshman Madeline Chamberlin won first place for the women, earning her an invitation to the X Games to participate in an exhibition for their snowboard street event.

The next day showcased snowboarders for slalom and giant slalom races. CVA lit up the podium led by veteran racer Emily Eames, who won both events in the open class division.

Her teammates would join her success with a total of nine podium finishes. For both the slalom and giant slalom events, Rollie Zagnolie placed first, Jerry MacGuire second and Austin Manley-O’Brien third, sweeping the youth men’s category. Senior Freddy McCarthy also earned first place in the slalom in the men’s open class division.

Over the four event weekend, CVA earned twenty-two podium finishes and many valuable USASA points toward qualifying for the National Championships in March.
