FAIRFIELD — Burton “Burt” Edgar Parker, 93, passed away peacefully in Fairfield on Saturday, Jan. 14, with his family at his side.

Burt was born in Durham, Feb. 4, 1918, to Gladys Shailer Haskell Parker and Harry Burton Parker. He graduated as the salutatorian of his class in 1936 from New Gloucester High School.

During the earlier years of World War II, he was employed at Remington Arms in Bridgeport, Conn., and at the height of the war, he moved to southern California, and worked as a machinist’s mate at the San Diego Shipyard. He later returned to Maine and married his first wife, Agnes Wardwell Milliken, in 1945, and they were together until her death in 1951.

He married his second wife, Barbara Ellen Piper, Jan. 29, 1953, and they had five children. On Oct. 9, 1992, Barbara passed away and Burt later lived with his companion, Marjorie Benway. In 2010, he moved in with his son and daughter-in-law in Fairfield.

In 1953, Burt began working at Advance Auto Sales on Franklin Street in Auburn and proudly retired as a service manager 30 years later. In the early 1960s, he also owned and managed Burt’s Variety on the corner of Lake Street and Park Avenue in Auburn. After retirement, he worked part-time as a driver for MetPath from 1985 until 1994.

Burt was active throughout his life and enjoyed woodworking, camping, gardening, working on automobiles, and following his beloved Boston Red Sox. He is remembered as a caring, independent, humble and honest man who loved spending time with his family and enjoyed discussions on current events and sports. Burt was also a skilled carpenter and built a house in New Gloucester with his first wife. He was also close to his sisters-in-law.

Though he lived in the Auburn area for most of his life, he appreciated traveling, most memorably in the late 1960s, when he and his wife Barbara drove a 1962 Plymouth station wagon with their five children, a dog and a trailer across most of the contiguous United States. He and Barbara vacationed often in their later years together and visited Hawaii, Mexico, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, and he will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Burt is survived by his longtime companion, Marjorie Benway; his children, Stephanie Parker and husband, William Bair, of Wales, Burtina Parent and husband, Patrick, of Greene, Douglas Parker and wife, Jeanne, of Leeds, Kendrick Parker and wife, Lou-Anne, of Fairfield and Lorrie Davis and husband, Raymond, of Livermore; his stepchildren, Joan Lambert and husband, Olin, of Three Rivers, Calif., William Milliken of Bakersfield, Calif., and Sonny Milliken and wife, Rose, of Windham; his grandchildren, Marissa Parker-Bair, Leanna Parker-Bair, Jeremey Gagne, Corey Gagne, Shayla Lapierre, Joel Parker, Sarah Brookes Parker, Jesse Fish, Kristen Fish Treml and Chantelle Davis; his stepgrandchildren, Brenda Griffith, William Bair, III, George Bair and Hannah Parent; and his 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to wives, Agnes and Barbara, he was predeceased by his mother, who passed at the age of 101; his father; and his sister, Mae Parker.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Maine General Home Health and Maine General Home Care and Hospice of Kennebec; Burt’s caring physician and friend, Dr. Kenneth Brodsky; Dr. Lisa Sauer and her staff; Dr. Bolduc; and Burt’s very special nurse, Dana Lewis.
