WESTBROOK — Cirque, dance and circus acrobatics will collide when Australia’s internationally acclaimed nouveau cirque troupe CiRCA performs Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center.
CiRCA breaks out of the big top to create a bold new vision of circus as a provocative and contemporary art form.
Performing to tracks by Leonard Cohen, Sigur Ros and Cake, CiRCA blends bodies, lights and sound to create a ballet of precision tumbling. The New York times hailed CiRCA as a troupe combining, “astonishing physical mastery” and “poetic resonance.’
“There are moments that are dynamic and exciting as acrobats fly through the air; then there are moments that are still, lyrical and beautiful as the performers balance precariously on each other or hang in suspension,” said Yaron Lifschitz, CiRCA’s artistic director.
The 80-minute performance, presenedt by Portland Ovations, will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Westbrook Middle School.
Tickets are $28 to $25 with a limited number of $10 student tickets. For tickets, call PortTix at 842-0800, visit the box office at Merrill Auditorium in Portland or log on to www.portlandovations.org.
