BRUNSWICK — The Theater Project’s Professional Ensemble will open Annie Baker’s comedy, “Circle Mirror Transformation,” at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20.

Set in a community center in a small Vermont town, the play begins on the first day of an acting class led by a free-spirited teacher named Marty. Her small group of students vary in age and interest. There is Schultz, a lonely divorced guy; Theresa, a former New York actress who has just moved to town; Lauren, an anti-social teenager; and James, Marty’s husband.

“Circle Mirror Transformation” unfolds over the six weeks of the workshop, with some relationships blooming and others withering. Through a series of silly acting exercises and games, the characters make surprising discoveries about themselves and each other.

The comedy was listed on the Top 10 lists for the New York Times and The New Yorker in 2010.

“Circle Mirror Transformation” will be presented through Feb. 19 along with “Winter Cabaret,” in repertory. For a full schedule of performances, visit www.theaterproject.com. Tickets are pay what you want with a suggested price of $18; they are available online or by calling 729-8584. The Theater Project is at 14 School St.
