DIXFIELD — Choose your real estate. DeFoe Gymnasium? Augusta Civic Center?

Go ahead and draw an 84-foot-long rectangle in the middle of Route 108 and hang two temporary hoops if you want. If the Dirigo boys’ basketball team plays as well as it did Wednesday night, nobody in Class C will beat the Cougars this winter, anywhere.

No. 1 Dirigo dismantled No. 2 Boothbay, 83-49, in an MVC and Western Class C verdict that left precious little open to interpretation.

The Seahawks couldn’t stop Cody St. Germain, who erupted for 31 points. Couldn’t keep point guard T.J. Frost from wreaking havoc in the open floor. Couldn’t contain the Cougars’ defense from steal after steal, leading to easy bucket after easy bucket.

Boothbay (8-2) is undefeated against the rest of the league. Dirigo (10-0) has conference, regional and state titles in its cross-hairs.

“That’s what we wanted to do right from the beginning is show what we are, and (winning by) 34 points I think does it,” St. Germain said.

Dirigo rallied from a slow start to win by 15 at Boothbay on opening night. The Cougars trailed 9-3 in the encore, then went on a 37-8 joyride to complete the half with a 23-point lead.

Ben Holmes and Josh Turbide combined for 17 points in the second period, including three relatively uncontested 3-pointers. Holmes had 13 points overall. Turbide turned in 10.

Frost (seven points, five assists, four steals) and Caleb Turner fueled the running game with smothering defense.

“They have one of the arguably best coaches (I.J. Pinkham) in the state of Maine ever, and they came out and had a defense that kind of set us on our heels at first,” Frost said. “We looked at the score and we were like, ‘Crap.’ We tried to get up and down, settle down, get back and run and get Cody and Ben some easy layups.”

You might say it worked. Dirigo shot 65 percent from the field in the second quarter, 59 percent for the half and an even 50 percent overall. The Cougars won the turnover battle by a whopping 26-7 margin.

Freshman John Hepburn led Boothbay with 15 points and eight rebounds. Anthony DiMauro added 13 points and five assists.

“We played a great game. We came out a little flat, and then our defense picked up,” Dirigo coach Travis Magnusson said. “We ran the floor really well. We played about as well as we can play.”

St. Germain scored seven of Dirigo’s first nine points and later landed the Cougars’ first 10 of a free-wheeling third quarter.

He enjoyed the show with the rest of the partisans in the decisive second period as Turbide and Holmes delivered inside and out.

Mitch Stanley and Hunter Ross also delivered buckets off a Dirigo bench that is noticeably deeper than those of its three consecutive regional title-winning teams.

“We had no intensity to start the game,” St. Germain said. “We just came out fast breaking the rest of the game, and it worked for us. I don’t think there’s anybody that can run with us.”

Boothbay went more than six minutes without a point in the second quarter while Dirigo delivered 19 straight.

Holmes had three steals and Frost and Turner two thefts apiece in that quarter alone.

Five quick points by Hepburn and a Ben Woodin 3-pointer kept Boothbay in it early.

“They did a good job. They were locking it down on Cody,” Magnusson said. “It was 13-12 (late in the first quarter) and we made two 3s in a row. Then they had to defend that, and that’s what makes us tough.”

Dirigo and Boothbay are no strangers, having met four times in the past 11 months.

With the exception of the Seahawks’ double-overtime win in a wild MVC championship almost a year ago, Dirigo has dominated the series, including a victory in the 2011 Western Maine final.

“Chances are we’ll see these guys again,” Frost said. “They’ll play a better game next time, but it gives us confidence that we beat them pretty good.”
