AUGUSTA — The state’s Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices will decide Jan. 25 whether it wants to investigate the financial filings for two groups that backed Lewiston’s casino effort.
Dennis Bailey of CasinosNO! filed a complaint against Green Jobs for ME and People of Lewiston Auburn Committee, arguing that the groups did not disclose all of their donors correctly.
Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the investigation at a 9 a.m. meeting in the commission office, 45 Memorial Circle in Augusta.
In a memo to the commission from Executive Director Jonathan Wayne, staff recommends that commissioners request accounting records, copies of checks and other financial documents that show who paid for the Lewiston casino’s campaign.
Voters statewide turned down the Lewiston casino effort overwhelmingly in November, with only 37 percent of voters supporting the effort.
According to the memo, the complaint is based on a document CasinosNO! obtained and released just before the vote. It was a partial option agreement, signed by members of Great Falls Recreation and Redevelopment LLC — backers of the Lewiston casino — but not by any potential buyers.
In a Dec. 22 letter to the commission, Bailey said the document could show Maine’s campaign laws were skirted.
Casino backers argue that all of their financial filings are in order and that they want to move on from the issue.
