SOUTH PARIS — Edward L. Plourde, Sr., 81, of Hancock Street in Rumford, died Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Maine Veterans Home, following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
He was born in Anson, a son of Ferdinand and Elizabeth (Richards) Plourde. Ed was educated in Rumford schools.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Ed was employed for 40 years with Oxford Paper Company in the maintenance department.
He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior. Ed was a member of American Legion Post No. 24 and was very active with the local ATV clubs. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
Ed will be remembered as a very devoted grandfather, who was referred to as Pepere.
Surviving are his children, Edward L. Plourde, Jr. and companion, Lori Lothrop of Leeds and Michael J. Plourde and companion, Kathy Pettis of Great Falls, Mont.; four grandchildren, Ryan Plourde, Shayne Plourde, Ben Plourde and Austin Lothrop; two sisters, Joan Plourde of Freeport and Marie Thomas and husband, John of Mexico; a brother, Robert “Squirt” Smith and wife, Pauline of Englewood, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Mary Jane (Legere) Plourde in 1995; and a sister, Theresa Heath.
