RUMFORD — A Maine Department of Transportation truck crashed into a utility pole on Route 2 Tuesday morning.
At approximately 4 a.m., the 1-ton pickup truck was sanding near the intersection of Route 2 and Route 232 in Rumford Point went it slid off the road and broke a utility pole, Norm Haggan, regional manager for MDOT, said.
Driver Christopher Gallant was not injured, Haggan said.
Rumford Police Department and Rumford Fire Department responded. Central Maine Power repaired power lines and the pole, which were lying in the middle of the road on a sharp corner, Lt. Keith Bickford, of the Rumford Fire Department, said.
The Fire Department remained at the location for seven hours helping to direct traffic while CMP worked to replace the pole, Bickford said.
Only one house lost power during the accident. Gail Rice, a CMP representative, said she was unaware of why the repair work took so long to complete.
Rice said the time of night and available light may have been a factor.
CMP was also busy late Monday night when a transformer caught fire on Route 108 in Peru near Main Street. Peru Fire Department responded at approximately 9:30 p.m.
A CMP representative said power was disrupted in Peru, Dixfield, Carthage and Mexico for a brief time.
