NEW GLOUCESTER — The trio Dos Canosos, Un Joven (two gray-haired guys and one young guy) will perform original and traditional Latin music at the New Gloucester Village Coffee House on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Trio members are Raul Freyre, Gary Wittner and Rafael Freyre.

The two gray-haired guys are Cuban vocalist Raul Freyre and American guitarist Wittner. Seasoned performers, they have more than 70 years of combined experience in the music field.

Raul Freyre, a native Cuban, grew up in Miami before moving to New England to raise his family (including band member Rafael Freyre).  He has sung professionally in a career spanning five decades, performing rock, rhythm & blues, and Latin music in Miami, Boston, Maine and now Guatemala, where he and his wife own a small coffee farm and spend half the year.  He also plays guitar and bass, and composes music.

Wittner, who plays seven-string guitar and provides vocals, has performed for  audiences of all ages on five continents.  He has represented the United States three times:  twice as a Kennendy Center/U.S. State Department Jazz Ambassador and once as a Fulbright Grant recipient.  

He has released five CDs, published one book and numerous magazine articles, and teaches at the Univeristy of Southern Maine’s School of Music and Bowdoin College.

Rafael Freyre is a native Maine multi-instrumentalist who plays bass, tres, tuba, and sings.  He is the original and current bassist for Maine’s award-winning funk band Sly Chi. He has also played with Maine’s Latin band Grupo Esperanza, Primo Cubano and Grupo Mofongo.
