MEXICO — The Rumford Association for the Advancement of Performing Arts will hold auditions on Tuesday, Feb. 7, for the two one-act plays to be presented at its dinner theater in April.
The plays are “At the Border” and “All Is Fair in Show Business.”
“At the Border” revolves around a border crossing which takes place in a Town Hall that spans the Canadian-U.S. border. The two mayors are embroiled in an ongoing feud. Matters worsen with the news of pending changes to the border crossing’s administration. The U.S. mayor sees this as an opportunity to guarantee his re-election; the Canadian mayor is sure his American counterpart is plotting to take full control of the crossing. The situation intensifies courtesy of a meddling janitor, persistent reporter and two over-the-hill hippies.
“At the Border” has nine roles: three for men, three for women and three that could be filled by either men or women.
In “All Is Fair in Show Business,” a fun-loving retiree is elated after landing her first acting job, a juicy role as a TV commercial spokeswoman for a popular fast-food restaurant.
All goes awry, however, when the director decides to recast the part with the retiree’s adversary. Demoted to an extra in the commercial, the retiree struggles to be recognized by the director as the best candidate for the role of spokeswoman.
“All Is Fair in Show Business” has six roles: four for women and two that could be filled by either men or women.
Auditions will be at 7 p.m. at Mountain Valley Middle School.
Scripts will be available for perusal at the Rumford Library through Feb. 6. Anyone planning to audition should contact Judith Kuhn at 364-7242 or [email protected] prior to Feb. 7 so enough audition papers will be available.
Rehearsals will be held at 6 or 8:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and every other week at the actors’ convenience.
The dinner theater will be presented on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, at the Eagles hall in Rumford.
MEXICO — On Tuesday, Feb. 14, the RAAPA Chorus will begin rehearsals for its April dinner theater. The chorus is open to adults beyond high-school age, with no audition required.
Rehearsals will be at 7 p.m. in the lecture hall at Mountain Valley Middle School on Highland Terrace.
Previous choral experience is advantageous for those with low voices because the tenors, altos and basses sing harmony 90 percent of the time. Among the songs to be performed this year are “Lollipop,” “Hey! Good Lookin’,” “Kokomo” and “Put on a Happy Face.”
There is no fee to participate, but people are asked to provide a rewound audio cassette or a blank CD on which the various parts are recorded. Prior to the first rehearsal, cassettes or CDs may be left at Larsen’s Electric in Mexico or given to Jim Robertson or Judith Kuhn.
To join the chorus, leave your name with Kuhn at [email protected] or call 364-7242. The sing-up deadline is Friday, Feb. 3.
There will also be a dance troupe and anyone with tap-dance training should contact Connie Porter at 562-8232 no later than Feb. 3. Dance rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays at 5:30 at the school.
The dinner theater will be presented April 27-28 at the Eagles hall in Rumford.
