PORTLAND (AP) — The U.S. Marshals Service says a 22-year-old Maine man is in stable condition after being shot in the leg by officers who were trying to apprehend him in Portland.

Officials say Arien L’Italien, of Biddeford, fired a handgun at members of the U.S. Marshals Maine Violent Offender Task Force as they attempted to arrest him on Mellen Street at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Officers returned fire and shot L’Italien, who was taken to Maine Medical Center. Nobody else was hurt.

L’Italien was wanted on a felony arrest warrant charging him with aggravated assault in Biddeford. He was charged Saturday with attempted murder of a federal officer and illegal possession of a firearm by a felon.

Portland police, the FBI and the Maine attorney general’s office are assisting in the investigation.
