HARTFORD — Firefighters from several departments were called to assist Buckfield Fire Department Sunday evening at a chimney fire at 347 Old Farm Town Road in Hartford.
Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, which was starting to spread to the walls of the home, and limited damages to several hundred dollars instead of tens of thousands.
Given the season’s warmer than normal winter temperatures, Chief Tim Brooks of the Buckfield Fire Department is warning residents who burn wood to check their chimneys and check them often.
Creosote builds up more quickly when wood stoves burn at lower temperatures, as on warmer winter days.
Brooks said that in Sunday’s fire, as well as a second handled by the department just days earlier, firefighters had to clean creosote build-up from chimneys.
Brooks said the build-up was not a direct cause of the blaze. He said the fire at Old Town Farm Road was likely caused by an old hookup for the wood stove that had not been covered properly.
Brooks said that it is now about mid-season for the burn season and urged residents to check their chimneys regularly for any kind of creosote build-up.
Sunday evening’s fire was the second chimney fire of the day. WMTW Channel 8 news reported an early morning fire damaged a home at 231A Town Farm Road in New Gloucester and sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries. That 2:30 a.m. blaze also started in the chimney of the home’s wood stove.
