WILTON — A matching grant for a flag project was donated Thursday to Wilton Day Homemakers Extension members.
Monica Magrath, representing Modern Woodmen of America, presented $2,000, matching the amount raised by the extension group, to some members who gathered at the town office.
There is now $4,645 in the flag account, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said. Irish is accepting and depositing donations for the project. Donations continue to come in, she said.
As part of a community service project, the extension group is planning to purchase 80 American flags to fly above the streets of Wilton, East Wilton and East Dixfield from May to November, Hazel Flagg, extension member said.
Poles have been chosen in four areas, and flags will be out just before Memorial Day. The group is now making plans to purchase hardware and a way to put the flags up. A small celebration of the progress made on the project will take place in February.
