Here’s a look at what several in our online community had to say about letters to the editor and stories in the news recently.

On a Sunday  letter to the editor by John R. Davis advocating for the impeachment of President Barack Obama Jonathan Albrecht of Dixfield wrote:

“Fox News has created a delusional, misinformed audience that belongs more on the Comedy Channel than in the voter’s booth. Not one specific charge is made here. Just one vague generality after another one without a scintilla of justification.

Perhaps that’s because President Obama has been the most successful president in our history in fighting Islamic extremism and its tactic of terrorism. Osama bin Laden is dead and the leadership of al-Qaeda destroyed. At least 20 of its leaders have joined bin Laden in the grave. This must be the Karl Rove trick — attack a politician at his strength.  For what should he be impeached — success?”

Another Sunday letter by Joan Churchill of Buckfield taking Maine Gov. Paul LePage to task for touting the largest tax cuts in state history during his State of the State address while at the same time proclaiming the state was broke fetched several reader comments.

“If the state can’t change the rules of DHHS and going to Washington won’t do any good then who made the rules in the first place? Are they written in cement? All of Congress gets a cost-of-living raise regardless of the economy, unlike the rest of us. Most of the elderly who have been helped at least one time in their lives have worked and contributed to the system, but kids having kids regularly for the state to support has got to be “worked on” to say the least.

No sense in closing the barn door after the horse has left . . .,” wrote Wilma Turcotte of Auburn.

On a Sunday story on the dangers of texting and driving, Cathy Bryant of Lewiston wrote: “Parents need to step in and take the cell phones. The teens don’t need them in school or while driving. There are still pay phones believe it or not. Nowadays teens seem to be attached at the hip to the electronics. Remember the first text while driving could be your last . . . it starts with the parents. If you care about your kids then you need to set the example. Nothing is as important as staying safe on the roads . . .”

A report on the visit to Lewiston by GOP presidential hopeful Dr. Ron Paul fetched dozens of comments.

Mike Lachance of Lewiston made several comments, including this one: “I’m more-or-less disgusted with the GOP field this election cycle. (And that in no way is an endorsement for ANY Democrat.) I find a few of Dr. Paul’s positions to be shallow and short-sighted (Israel, among others), but I will say he is the most logical candidate on either side of the political spectrum.”
