PARIS — McLaughlin Garden has announced its upcoming winter lecture series. Plan on attending one or all of the Wednesday afternoon talks to brighten up dark winter days and plan for spring. The lectures will be held at 4 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
On Feb. 15, Edith Ellis of Sunnyside Gardens in Turner will talk and present slides on the bones of an English style garden.
On Feb. 29, Tom York of York’s Hardy Rhododendrons in Bath will speak about rhododendrons and azaleas that are hardy for cold Maine winters.
On March 7, Brett Thompson from Worm Biz will explain how we can help prevent global warming with “global worming.” Those attending will learn how to get started with their own worm composting.
On the first day of spring, March 21, Steve Palmer from Plainview Farm in Yarmouth will introduce people to some of his favorite hosta varieties and talk about their care.
On April 4, Jeff O’Donal of O’Donal’s Nursery in Gorham will talk about Maine’s own Barth daylilies. He will explain their history and what makes them special additions to Maine gardens.
Other dates to watch for:
Mother’s Day weekend, May 11-13, is the Wildflower Celebration. The garden opens for the season and the annual plant sale begins.
Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, is the Lilac Festival.
