RUMFORD – Each year, the Maine National Honor Society engages in a statewide service project. During this year’s state convention, the NHS students will put together bags of supplies for children in need.
NHS members at Mountain Valley High School have asked students and staff members to contribute pencils, pens, glue sticks, glitter, notebooks, sticky notes, stickers, rulers, pencil boxes, mini calculators, paint brushes, paper clips, erasers, colored pencils, crayons, construction paper, tissues, highlighters, pencil sharpeners and coloring books. They would welcome donations from the community as well.
Katie Billings, president of the MVHS chapter, said, “At the state convention, we will combine the donations from all of the chapters throughout the state and then create ‘I Care’ bags for children in need.”
“We are pleased that Homeland Security donated bags with drawstring tops,” she continued.
Billings, who is also the state NHS public relations officer, said, “In addition to providing service to children in need, the project is a way for NHS students from schools across the state to meet each other and interact. During the convention, each student will go to a session to create the bags at a different time with a different group of people. It’s a social event as well as a service project.”
“After the bags are made, they will be distributed through the Department of Health and Human Services,” said Billings.
The state convention will be held March 8 and 9 so there is plenty of time to make a contribution.
“If you would like to drop off donations, there will be a box in the lobby of Mountain Valley High School,” Billings said. “At the same time, community members may contribute new and used books of all types but we especially need textbooks for World Wide Book Drive Organization. The book drive is a secondary state service project for the Maine NHS this year.”
The World Wide Book Drive will donate the books to children in disaster zones, poverty stricken communities, schools, libraries and domestic and international charities.
These projects exemplify the four qualities for which NHS members are chosen: service, scholarship, character and leadership.
