MEXICO — A local man remained behind bars Thursday night, charged with threatening a woman with a rifle.

David Boynton, 49, was charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, all Class C charges, police Lt. Roy Hodsdon said.

On Wednesday at 10:06 p.m. police officer Keith Tilsley responded to a report of a woman who had been assaulted and threatened with a rifle on Porter Bridge Road, he said.

Law enforcement officers from Rumford, Dixfield, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police also responded, Hodsdon said.

Two men and one woman left the house when police arrived. Boynton refused to go outside for a brief time, he said.

“He was hiding in a small room,” Hodsdon said.

Boynton was finally ordered out and the weapon was found in the room he was hiding in, Hodsdon said.

Boynton is currently on probation for a domestic violence assault in 2010 and is not permitted to have a gun, Hodsdon said.

The woman had no visible injuries, he said.

Boynton was not eligible for bail due to the nature of the crimes. He is scheduled to appear March 6 in Oxford County Superior Court, Hodsdon said.
