CANTON — A man was killed in a burning building at 9 Old School Road late this afternoon, fire officials said.

Investigator Danny Young of the State Fire Marshal’s Office said on the scene shortly before 7 p.m. that officials had not recovered a body because the building was still burning. However, he said a man, believed to be Sherwood Campbell, 64, went into the building while it was on fire and did not emerge.

Campbell was last seen yelling for help from a second-floor window as fire engulfed his house, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Campbell went back into the burning house to rescue three dogs, McCausland said. He said a team of three fire investigators are at the fire scene and will begin the search for the man once the fire has been extinguished.

Officials were treating the blaze as a fatal fire, Young said.

Campbell lived at 9 School Street, according to officials and residents at the scene.

The fire was reported at about 5 p.m.
