LEWISTON — A Boston man was ordered jailed on $250,000 bail Friday after he gave police a fake name when he was arrested earlier in the week.
Mark Hancock, 47, made an appearance in 8th District Court one day after another court hearing in which he used a different name.
Hancock was arrested Tuesday night when police and drug agents raided an apartment at 51 Pierce St. Drug officials said Hancock was found with a large amount of pre-packaged marijuana, prescription drugs and several firearms.
He was arrested on charges of aggravated drug trafficking, possession of oxycodone and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Also arrested on a drug trafficking charge Tuesday was 25-year-old Crystal Macia, who lives in the apartment that was searched.
The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency raided the home, along with Lewiston police and task force agents with the federal DEA-High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area.
When Hancock was taken into custody, he gave police the name David Liberti and claimed he lived in the apartment with Macia. He provided a Social Security number to match the name.
Police had their doubts from the start.
“Agents felt that there was something that didn’t add up,” said MDEA Supervisor Matt Cashman. “Somehow, two plus two did not equal four.”
The federal fingerprint system verified those suspicions. When a match was found for the suspect’s prints, his identification was confirmed as Hancock, who has an extensive criminal record in Massachusetts and Texas. In fact, Hancock was found to be wanted in Texas after walking away from a prison farm in that state, police said.
“It was just good, old-fashioned police work all around,” Cashman said.
Local and federal police are continuing to investigate Hancock’s background.
On Thursday, when the man believed to be David Liberti made a court appearance, he was given personal recognizance bail. On Friday, after court officials learned of the fake identification, that bail was upped to $250,000.
Hancock remained at the Androscoggin County Jail Friday night.
