CANTON — Sherwood L. Campbell, 64, of Canton, died unexpectedly early Wednesday, Feb. 8, at his home.

He was born Nov. 30, 1947, in Rumford, a son of Sheldon and Norma (Davis) Campbell. He attended local schools, graduating from Canton High School and later from the University of Maine at Orono with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served in the Philippines from1967 to 1971. Upon his discharge from the military, he worked at G.H. Bass, Brindes Leather and later at the Wilton Tannery.

Sherwood was an avid reader, who also enjoyed watching western movies, debating current political issues and keeping an eye on his favorite New England sports teams, the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. He also had achieved his dream of traveling the Trans-Canada Railroad, which he did going through Canadian Rockies onto Vancouver. Sherwood loved his dogs over the years especially, Alle, Little Dog and Whompa.

He is survived by his parents, Sheldon and Norma Campbell of Canton; siblings, Sheryl Campbell and Peter Hines of Bowdoinham, Marcia (Campbell) Cummings and her husband, Rick, of South Paris, Maria Amero of Turner, Jacalyn Whittemore of Connecticut, and Cindy Holland of Canton; and a brother-in-law, Mark Blanchette of Canton.

He was predeceased by a sister, Cheri Blanchette; and grandparents, Ruth Davis and Ralph and Maude Campbell.
