DIXFIELD — Two Dirigo High School sophomore boys were expelled by the RSU 10 board Monday night.

The expulsions are the result of an assault on two other Dirigo boys in a classroom in the east campus of the high school at the end of January. The two expelled boys have been suspended since the incident occurred in the early afternoon of Jan. 30.

One of the boys, along with his mother and the guardian of the second boy, attended the 70-minute closed session Monday. Superintendent Tom Ward said the boy who was not in attendance has transferred to another high school outside RSU 10.

If the second boy returns to Dirigo High School, he will be subject to the same re-entry criteria as the boy who was in attendance Monday night.

Ward said he will meet with the parent to discuss the conditions for re-entry. They are counseling, administration of a risk assessment test, and community service.

If all criteria are met, the board will act on readmitting the boy or boys to school. There is no time frame for readmitting an expelled student.

Ward said the school will also assure that class work is sent home while the student is out.

These expulsions were the first of the 2011-12 school year.

Ward said previously that the incident that caused the expulsions was a first since he has been a superintendent. Although there have been other fights, Ward said he has never encountered an incident where students entered a classroom to assault other students.

Also on Monday, several resignations for the purpose of retirement were announced. They are: Alice Flagg, kindergarten teacher, Judy Drury, reading teacher, and Cynthia Norton, librarian technician, all staff members at Hartford-Sumner Elementary School; and Donna Morse, Mountain Valley Middle School sixth-grade language arts teacher. Although previously announced, the retirement of Rumford Elementary School Principal Anne Chamberlin was also confirmed.

Appointments made Monday night were Jaymie Milledge as Buckfield Junior-Senior High School junior varsity softball coach, and Dave Buck as Dirigo Middle School co-ed junior varsity soccer coach.
