BETHEL — A registered sex offender was indicted Friday on three counts of sexually abusing a minor.

Christopher Lee Sheldon, 27, of 23 Mason St., Apt. 18, Bethel, faces three felony counts of sexual abuse of a minor and a charge of violation of condition of release.

Sheldon was originally arrested Jan. 5 after Rumford police received a complaint from a 16-year-old girl, Rumford police Detective Sgt. James Bernard told the Sun Journal in January. The girl told police she had been involved in a sexual relationship with Sheldon starting when she was 15.

According to the Maine Sex Offender Registry, Sheldon was convicted on Nov. 14, 2005, of unlawful sexual contact in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn. He is required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

On Jan. 6, Sheldon’s bail was set at $500 cash or a supervised release through Maine Pretrial Services. On Tuesday evening, he remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. According to his bail conditions, Sheldon must not have contact with girls under 16 years old.
